I can relate to people with big plans, or even the “How to get rich quick” googlers. Unfortunately, the hardest part about creating a successful business or achieving elite levels of success isn’t coming up with the idea.
Just like in the real world, for any of these dreams to come to fruition, you’re going to have to work for it.
Here’s the problem we all face. There’s no push-to-start button. I’m sure you’ve heard it at least once before, “there’s no business if you don’t start.” But let’s bring this point home a little more clearly.
There is no step-by-step pathway that you can follow to entrepreneurial success. Unlike many of the self-help articles you’ve undoubtedly read while planning your own Mark Zuckerberg success story, I’m going to tell you the truth. There is no step-by-step guide that anyone can read that will create a successful entrepreneur. Read that sentence again. You don’t have to believe it yet, just take it in.
But Lachlan, there are plenty of people who have published proven guides to success, with many people having followed them to successes of their own.
I’m not saying there’s no advice model, or general guide to follow that won’t help an up and coming entrepreneur become successful. Anybody with Tim Ferris sitting in his or her corner would undoubtedly become successful. What I am saying is that step-by-step entrepreneurial guides more often than not lead to complacency.
Let me ask an important question.
Have you ever read an inspiring book or article about becoming a successful entrepreneur, or leader – A piece of advice or information that changed your perception of business altogether?
If the answer is yes, then my next question is: are you a successful entrepreneur?
Most responses to the first and second questions respectively are: yes, and no. The stats speak for themselves. So why is it that there is so much material, so much information out there written by truly successful people, and yet most of us fail to reach the peak of our success?
This leads us to the one step guide to entrepreneurial success: The one thing that you must have in order to become truly successful.
So here we go.
NUMBER 1: AMBITION
No, this isn’t a cop out. Why is it that a majority of readers will consider this worthless advice? This should be exciting news! I’m telling you that you only really need one quality to guarantee success. For those who were disappointed just thirty seconds ago to hear that there was no universal business walk-through to success, well I’ve just cut the steps right down for you.
Growing up we are generally taught that those who are the smartest, or the strongest, or the best looking are quantifiably the best. However, when measuring entrepreneurial success, your ability to do something counts for far less than your actual drive to do it. Fortunately for those of us who aren’t undeniably the best at what we do, there is one characteristic that we can teach ourselves in order to project our success beyond our theoretical place in the intellectual or physical pecking order.
Teach yourself to be ambitious.
Discussions with established entrepreneurs in charge of successful businesses have led me to this discovery that ambition really is everything. This is because, to those who are thirsty enough for success, and those willing to work hard enough, success is inevitable.
Don’t let this fool you. Ambition is one step, but it’s one lifelong step. The glory of success doesn’t come overnight. Where most people fall over is that they’re not aware of how much work it takes to become successful.
For now, just take the best idea you’ve ever had, and do something about it, because for every one of you that will be sitting reading articles in a week’s time, a month’s time, a year’s time, there will be others with greater ambition that are already on their way to entrepreneurial success.
